The Maddox Shop
began in 1934 as a surgical shop
specializing in hand made braces, corsets and girdles for polio victims.
Peggy Maddox opened the store after working in the surgical department
at Skillern's where she learned about braces. The first shop was located
in her house, but in 1939 Peggy moved to the Medical Arts Building at
Ervay and Live Oak because she had run out of room. There she sold
surgical garments and abdominal belts for 10 years. From there she moved
the business to Oak Lawn where she made braces for polio children. In
the 1950's Peggy's daughter in law, Doris, began working with her and
eventually bought the business. The store was now called The Peggy
Maddox Shop. In 1960 the store moved to Lake Park in Casa Linda. After 1
year the shop moved to Casa Linda Plaza next door to the present
location. It was small but as time went by it was enlarged. In 1964 the
name changed to The Maddox Shop. Many doctors began recommending the
store to their patients and the business began to grow. By now the the
store included complete foundation sales and alterations, and some
ladies outerwear. By 1972 the Maddox Shop became regionally known for
their custom fitted undergarments and breast prostheses. The store is
still family owned and retains all of the qualities that make the Maddox
Shop unique while updating the operation and computerizing the
bookkeeping.
According to Doris
Maddox the Lilyette bra #479 put her in business in 1969. The first bras
were made of cotton. In the early years women bound their breast's and
wore a camisole garment. Some of the early manufacturers of bras were
Peter Pan, Warners, and Perma Lift. The first mastectomy forms were all
foam rubber with holes in the back to put marbles in to weigh it down.
Love made the first mastectomy bra in regular,3/4th and longline. Most
ladies wore girdles and a longline bra which hooked to the girdle. Camp
introduced the first gel form prostheses. True Life was the only fluid
filled form. Through the years the Maddox Shop has kept up with the
times but has never forgotten what makes it special. The thing that
separates The Maddox Shop from all other competitors is it's
personalized service and custom fitting. |
